Are electronic textbooks the future?
Electronic textbooks have been around for years. But recently, a new trend is coming to the forefront: e-textbooks that record and report your progress.
This means that the e-book itself will have a built in meter, recording how many pages you “read” and at what rate you study the material.
How will this affect us as authors and teachers?
For one, with the increased emphasis on testing and reporting in education, these types of textbooks may make data dissemination easier.
On the other hand, as authors, a greater emphasis might be placed on creating even more engaging materials with various checkpoints and dynamic material. Elements like hyperlinks and visual charts will become increasingly important. There will be a period of adapting, coupled with students and institutions adopting this new technology.
